Misogynoir brings together the words misogyny (the hatred or prejudice against women) and noir (the term for ‘black’ in the French language). Coined by Dr. Moya Bailey in 2010, “misogynoir” is defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary as the hatred of, aversion to, or prejudice against Black women.

Medical misogynoir, as defined by Dr. Shontay Delalue in 2024, is the exploitation, negligence, and/or blatant disregard for Black women, based on their race and gender, when receiving medical treatment or care.

Medical comics also known as graphic medicine, are a way to illustrate complex medical issues in a concise manner.

Medical Misogynoir™ is a comic series based on research that explores the experiences of Black women in medicine.
